First airing in 1976, history was made right there in our living rooms as we watched a series portraying three women who were glamourous, resourceful and had a kick-ass skill set.
An instant hit, Charlie’s Angels awakened an entire generation of Angels. Powerful, independent and strong - who wouldn’t want to be one? Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith) embodied poise and steely resolve. Sabrina Duncan (Kate Jackson) was the sharp, quick-thinking leader. Then, in season two, Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd) was brought in as the younger sister of original Angel Jill Munroe (Farrah Fawcett).
So much more than just style icons, they were detectives, martial arts masters, and societal rule breakers. We loved them. These women were the heroes, week in and week out. Charlie? He was never on screen, we would hear the enigmatic unseen boss of the agency over the speakerphone as he sent the Angels on crime-solving missions.
This was a series that proved to the world that women could be sexy AND strong. And not just on screen. The actresses truly represented the show’s groundbreaking spirit.
